Lucknow, Read: Uttar Pradesh has secured the first position in the country in the test being conducted to monitor the quality and condition of groundwater sources. Against the testing target of 48,055 sources set by the Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation, Ministry of Jal Shakti for the first half of the financial year 2026-27, testing of 45,361 sources has been completed in the state. According to the data till September 15, 2026, this is 94.39 percent of the target.
Along with groundwater sources, underground and overhead tanks and other sources of water are also being tested in state and district level laboratories. UP Jal Nigam Rural Managing Director Yogesh Kumar said regular testing of groundwater sources is important to monitor the quality of drinking water and the condition of water sources.
He said that emphasis is being laid on quality, source sustainability and intensive monitoring of water sources. According to Gyanendra Kumar Chaudhary, Superintending Engineer and State Laboratory Head of UP Jal Nigam Rural, Uttar Pradesh's achievement of 94.39 percent is about 44 percent more than the national average of 50.46 percent. After UP, Punjab and Andhra Pradesh are at second and third place in state-wise achievement with 83.46 percent. Uttarakhand is at fourth place with 82.30 percent achievement and Kerala is at fifth place with 81.13 percent achievement.
Now investigation of 2,694 sources remains
Now 2,694 sources are left to be investigated to meet the set target in the state. After achieving more than 94 percent of the target in the first half itself, the process of completing the investigation of the remaining sources is going on. According to the department, regular testing will help in further strengthening the monitoring of the quality of water sources and their sustainability.
