UP leads in dowry deaths, Bihar ahead in forced marriages, how will women be safe?

There are many types of crimes against women in the country. Be it eve teasing, sexual harassment, domestic violence or dowry related crimes. Every year thousands of women become victims of such crimes and due to this their mental condition is also affected. The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) reports released from time to time show that Uttar Pradesh is at the forefront in the case of dowry deaths. In the year 2024, 2038 cases were reported in Uttar Pradesh in which women died due to dowry.

 

In this matter, the performance of the North-Eastern states was the best and in many states not a single woman lost her life due to dowry. At the same time, if we look at the cases of forced marriage of a woman, Bihar is at the forefront. In one year, 12438 cases of girls being kidnapped or forced into marriage were reported.

Incidents of death in dowry case

NCRB report According to , the maximum number of cases of dowry related deaths were reported from Uttar Pradesh. There were 2038 deaths in one year. There were 1078 incidents in Bihar and 450 incidents in Madhya Pradesh in one year. Only 7 cases were registered in Tamil Nadu, 16 in Gujarat, 0 in Himachal Pradesh and 143 in Maharashtra. Let us tell you that such cases are registered under Section 80 of the Indian Justice Code and Section 304B of the IPC.

At the same time, cruelty committed by the husband or his relatives is registered under section 498A of IPC and section 85 of BNS. In this matter also, Uttar Pradesh remained at the forefront and 21266 cases were reported in one year. 1842 cases were reported in Bihar, 10538 in Maharashtra and 7514 in Madhya Pradesh.

According to this report of NCRB, in the year 2024, a total of 28949 cases of kidnapping or forcing women into marriage were reported across the country. The maximum number of cases were from Bihar. In Bihar, a total of 5803 cases were registered under Section 87 of the Indian Code of Justice (BNS) and a total of 6635 cases under Section 366 of the IPC i.e. a total of 12438 cases in a year.

Similarly, 7859 cases were registered in UP, 1539 cases in Rajasthan and 1383 cases in Assam. A total of 400 cases were registered in Jammu and Kashmir and 1556 cases were registered in Punjab. Only 9 cases were registered in Karnataka, 11 in Kerala and 26 in Tripura.

 

There were also many cases of forced marriage of girls below 18 years of age. A total of 13177 cases of forced marriage of minor girls were reported in one year. Maximum 6214 cases were reported from Bihar and a total of 2587 cases of forced marriage of minor girls were reported from Uttar Pradesh. Similarly, 1356 minor girls were kidnapped in Punjab, 422 in Gujarat and 520 in Assam for forced marriage. A total of 11 cases of girls being sold for sex work were also reported in the year.
