UP News: Uttar Pradesh has made a big achievement under the Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Free Electricity Scheme. Under the leadership of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, the state has reached first place in the country in terms of cumulative rooftop solar installations. Uttar Pradesh has left Gujarat and Maharashtra behind in this matter. Till November 5, 2026, 9,53,201 rooftop solar plants have been installed in the state. Even in October 2026, UP stood first in the country by installing more than 75,031 solar plants.
Central and state governments gave subsidy of more than ₹8,454 crore
According to UPNEDA Director Ravinder Kumar, financial assistance from the Central and State Governments has a big role in this achievement. So far, a total subsidy of more than ₹8,454.5 crore has been given by both the governments. In this, the Central Government's share is ₹6,254.5 crore and the additional subsidy given by the Uttar Pradesh Government is more than ₹2,200 crore. With this financial assistance, it has become easy and economical for common families to install solar plants on the roof of their houses. This is helping in saving electricity bills and also promoting clean energy.
Electricity worth about ₹ 9.26 crore is being generated every day.
So far, 3,167.57 MW capacity rooftop solar plants have been installed in the state. It is estimated that about 1.42 crore units of clean electricity will be generated from these every day. If the price of one unit of electricity is considered to be ₹ 6.50, then the cost of electricity generated per day is approximately ₹ 9.26 crore and approximately ₹ 3,380 crore annually. This is helping in reducing dependence on conventional electricity and providing economic benefits to consumers.
Thousands of acres of land being saved from solar plant
A major advantage of rooftop solar is that electricity is generated on the rooftops of homes. This reduces the need for land to build large solar parks. To set up a solar plant on land equal to the available capacity, approximately 12,670 acres of land would be required. In this way, the need to use so much land can be avoided by installing solar plants on rooftops. Apart from this, these plants are estimated to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by about 35 lakh metric tons every year.
More than one lakh employment opportunities, more than 8,700 vendors active
PM Surya Ghar Yojana has also created new employment and business opportunities in the state. There are more than 8,700 listed solar vendors operating in Uttar Pradesh and more than one lakh direct and indirect employment opportunities have been generated in this sector. Business is increasing in works like solar panels, inverters, batteries, electrical equipment, installation, transportation of goods, storage and maintenance. This entire business chain is expected to create business opportunities worth ₹45 to ₹50 crore per day.
Expressway will boost business and industry
The expressway network of Uttar Pradesh can also prove useful for solar industry and transportation of goods. Yamuna, Agra-Lucknow, Purvanchal, Bundelkhand, Gorakhpur Link and Ganga Expressway connect different industrial and business areas of the state. This can help in accessing the solar energy markets of North, Central and Eastern India.
The success of PM Surya Ghar Yojana is promoting clean energy, employment, investment and local business in Uttar Pradesh. The state is now not only ahead in setting up solar plants, but is also moving towards becoming a major center of industries and businesses related to green energy.
