Lucknow. The industry discussed the possibilities of developing Uttar Pradesh as a major textile and technical textile hub of the country on the second day of UP TEX-2026. Industrialists cited the state's industrial capacity, young workforce, traditional textile heritage and large domestic market as its main strengths.
According to industry representatives, Uttar Pradesh can increase its share in the global textile supply chain. For this, there is a need to continuously work on modern technology, skill development, technological upgradation and self-reliance along with new investments.
Big opportunity for UP in technical textile of defense sector
Manoj Gupta, Chairman, MKU Limited, said that Uttar Pradesh has the potential to become a major center for the production of technical textiles and high-performance materials used in the defense sector.
He described the PM Mitra Mega Textile Park being developed in Lucknow-Hardoi as an important step in this direction. According to Gupta, his group has established a manufacturing unit of modern materials and sciences in an area of about three hectares in Kanpur Defense Corridor.
Poly-ethylene based high-strength fabric is produced in this unit, which is used in making bullet proof jackets and helmets.
Gupta said that if the entire industrial ecosystem from high-performance fiber to finished products is developed in Uttar Pradesh, then self-reliance in the needs of the defense sector will increase and foreign dependence can be reduced. Along with this, new industrial units, investment and employment opportunities will also be created.
New opportunities for UP in the global market
Ravi Sam, Vice Chairman of Texprosil and Chairman of South India Textile Research Association, said that the current global circumstances have created new opportunities for the Indian textile industry.
He said that new markets are opening up for Indian textile products through free trade agreements. Textile exports from Uttar Pradesh are also increasing and the state has ample scope for further expansion in this sector.
Ravi Sam described skill development, increasing production capacity, sustainability, traceability and timely supply as important. According to him, with the development of modern and world-class processing facilities, UP can be able to meet international quality standards.
Banarasi clothes and carpets of Bhadohi-Mirzapur will get new strength.
Ravi Sam said that there is a need to connect the traditional textile strength of Uttar Pradesh with modern technology. Banarasi textiles and Mirzapur-Bhadohi carpets are important identities of the state.
By connecting these traditional industries with better technology, modern processing and world-class facilities, Uttar Pradesh can be made the leading textile hub of the country.
Self-reliance in textile machinery will reduce imports.
Ketan Sanghvi, Director of ITME Society and Lakshmi Shuttleless Looms Private Limited, emphasized on India's potential in textile machinery manufacturing.
He described the plan to develop a special textile machinery park in about 1,000 acres around Kanpur as an important initiative. According to Sanghvi, India's import dependence in some areas of textile machinery ranges from 80 to 90 percent.
He said that increasing local manufacturing of machinery in the country will reduce imports, save foreign exchange and strengthen Make in India.
International Textile Machinery Exhibition in Greater Noida in December
Ketan Sanghvi said that the International Textile Machinery Exhibition will be organized by ITME Society from 4th to 9th December at India Expo Mart in Greater Noida.
Companies from about 40 countries are proposed to participate in this exhibition and display more than 3,500 machines.
