US Air Force plane goes missing after emergency signal, flying over Qatar
Washington. Amid escalating tensions in the Middle East, a KC-135 aircraft of the United States Air Force has gone missing. The aircraft was flying over Qatar and suddenly disappeared from the radar. According to flight tracking platform Flight Radar 24, the aircraft issued a ‘7700’ distress signal during the flight, which indicates an emergency. The KC-135 Stratotanker aircraft is also called a flying gas station because it provides fuel to fighter jets mid-air.
Iran’s semi-official news agency Fars reported the plane’s disappearance, citing data from Flight Radar 24. The plane was stationed at Al Dhafra Air Base in the United Arab Emirates and was participating in military operations in the Middle East. According to tracking data, the plane circled for some time and then began descending for landing, but contact was lost after that. The exact cause of the emergency is still unclear, and there has been no official confirmation linking the incident to any hostile action. It should be noted that the US military previously lost a KC-135 aircraft during the Iran war in March.
What is the KC-135 Stratotanker?
The KC-135 Stratotanker is a military aircraft equipped with four turbofan engines (mounted under its wings) and used for aerial refueling. The aircraft has a cargo deck above the refueling system, allowing it to carry both passengers and equipment. The aircraft is used to refuel other aircraft mid-air. This aircraft has been a part of US Air Force operations for a long time.
The aircraft helps fighters, bombers, and other military aircraft stay airborne for longer periods of time and fly longer distances. It also supports aircraft of the U.S. Navy, Marines, and allied nations. Hundreds of KC-135 aircraft are in service with the U.S. Air Force, Air National Guard, and Air Force Reserve.
Other Missions
In addition to mid-air refueling, the KC-135 can also transport passengers and cargo, support air medical rescue missions, and transport injured or sick patients using specialized medical pallets. During air medical rescue missions, the crew may also include a medical team of flight nurses and technicians. Depending on the aircraft configuration, it can carry approximately 37,600 kilograms of cargo or several dozen passengers.
