Another action-packed day at the US Open delivered plenty of big names, eye-catching performances and more results from Flushing Meadows. Carlos Alcaraz continued his title defence by defeating American 20th seed Tommy Paul 6-4, 6-3, 6-4 to book his place in the quarterfinals. The Spaniard remains firmly in contention for back-to-back US Open titles, while American Frances Tiafoe also advanced after getting past former champion Daniil Medvedev in straight sets.
Tiafoe, seeded 11th, overcame seventh seed Medvedev 7-6 (7/1), 6-4, 7-6 (8/6) to reach the US Open quarterfinals for the fourth time in five years. Ben Shelton also produced a dominant display, sweeping aside Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-2, 6-3, 6-4.
Carlos Alcaraz Storms Into US Open Quarterfinals With Straight-Set Win
Carlos Alcaraz continued his impressive US Open title defence by defeating American 20th seed Tommy Paul 6-4, 6-3, 6-4 on Sunday to reach the quarterfinals. The second seed, playing his first tournament in four months after recovering from a right wrist injury, showed no signs of rust as he produced 33 winners and saved three of four break points during the two-hour, 20-minute victory.
Alcaraz dropped just one set across his first four matches in New York and has now won 18 consecutive Grand Slam matches, extending a streak that includes his 2025 US Open triumph and Australian Open title earlier this year. He also improved his head-to-head record against Paul to 7-2 and has now beaten the American at all four Grand Slam tournaments.
The Spaniard, who has won 26 of his 29 matches this season, said he focused on staying aggressive against Paul throughout the contest. “I played my game. I tried to play my style,” Alcaraz said. “I just tried to be ready for a battle and tried to be aggressive all the time.” Asked whether he felt fully recovered physically, the 23-year-old added: “I think so,” before highlighting his strong record in New York. “Every time that I come here, I play my best,” he said.
Ben Shelton Books US Open Quarterfinal Clash Against Carlos Alcaraz
Ben Shelton has found his rhythm at the US Open after a demanding opening week, powering past former World No. 3 Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-2, 6-3, 6-4 in just one hour and 51 minutes to book a quarterfinal clash with defending champion Carlos Alcaraz. The eighth-seeded American was pushed to four sets in each of his first three matches against Tallon Griekspoor, Hubert Hurkacz and Denis Shapovalov, but produced a much sharper display against Tsitsipas inside Arthur Ashe Stadium. Shelton has now beaten three successive players who have reached the Top 10 of the PIF ATP Rankings and improved to 12-2 since the post-Wimbledon hard-court swing, which includes his second ATP Masters 1000 title in Montreal.
Tsitsipas, who had arrived in New York after impressive wins over Cincinnati champion Arthur Fils, Lloyd Harris and 18th seed Jiri Lehecka, struggled to impose himself and received medical attention late in the second set. Shelton took advantage, breaking early in the third before closing out the match comfortably. The 23-year-old is now through to his sixth Grand Slam quarterfinal and second at the US Open, where he reached the semifinals in 2023. He will next face Alcaraz, who also advanced in straight sets against Tommy Paul earlier Sunday. Alcaraz leads their Lexus ATP Head2Head 3-0, although the pair have not met since last year’s Roland Garros.
Tiafoe, Michelsen Set Up All-American US Open Quarterfinal
Frances Tiafoe continued his strong run at the US Open by beating seventh-seeded Daniil Medvedev 7-6 (7/1), 6-4, 7-6 (8/6) on Sunday to reach the quarterfinals for the fourth time in five years. The 11th-seeded American, a two-time semifinalist in New York, overturned a difficult recent record against Medvedev, who had won six of their previous seven meetings. Backed by a lively Louis Armstrong Stadium crowd, Tiafoe embraced the atmosphere, saying, “The energy has been amazing. It’s like the people’s court. I’m loving the energy for sure.” Medvedev, the 2021 US Open champion and a six-time Grand Slam finalist, has endured an inconsistent 2026 despite winning two ATP titles and beating Carlos Alcaraz at Indian Wells.
Tiafoe will now meet fellow American Alex Michelsen in the quarterfinals after the 22nd-seeded Michelsen defeated Argentina’s Tomas Martin Etcheverry 7-6, 6-4, 6-4 to reach his first Grand Slam quarterfinal. The California native has been particularly impressive in New York, winning every match in straight sets and becoming the first American man to reach the last eight on Sunday. Michelsen, who entered the tournament with a 37-16 record in 2026, including a runner-up finish in Cincinnati, said, “I haven’t lost a set here this year. I’ve just been playing some really good ball.” Their meeting also guarantees that an American man will reach the US Open semifinals.
