The new ‘username’ feature coming to WhatsApp, the favorite messaging platform of more than 50 million users in India, is currently the center of attention. Meta has been given strict instructions not to launch it until negotiations with the government are over. The main attraction of this feature, which was released on June 29, 2026, is that from now on, you can chat using a unique ‘username’ without keeping your personal mobile number hidden. Users will be given the option to choose their own username, which may seem great at first, but the main controversy is the huge security risks hidden behind it.

The government’s notification has made it clear that criminals can easily disguise themselves by taking advantage of this feature. As a result, scams such as online fraud, phishing and dangerous ‘digital arrests’ are likely to increase dramatically. Besides, it will become easier to mislead common people and commit identity fraud by creating fake usernames of various government offices, financial institutions or famous personalities.

Amidst the username controversy, Meta has brought its first paid subscription, WhatsApp Plus, to India. For just Rs 79 per month, this optional plan offers exclusive themes, attractive ringtones and great app customization options like stickers. However, there are no new messaging or privacy features and WhatsApp’s core chatting and calling services remain completely free for ordinary users.
