In Rishikesh, Uttarakhand, the police have taken major action against a gang active on charges of intimidating people, assault, illegal extortion and blackmailing by allegedly interfering in land and family disputes. Police have arrested three accused including gang leader Jagjit alias Jagga under the Gangster Act. According to the police, Jagjeet used to call himself 'King of Uttarakhand'. The search for another named accused of the gang, Ravi Gupta, is going on.
On the instructions of Senior Superintendent of Police, Dehradun, Rishikesh Police took this action on Saturday as part of the campaign being conducted against criminals involved in organized crimes, which was revealed by the police on Sunday. According to the police, Jagjeet alias Jagga was running an organized gang along with his associates.
The gang is accused of forcibly interfering in land and family disputes, threatening people, assaulting people and allegedly making illegal extortion and blackmailing by threatening to make photo-videos viral. According to the police, the accused used to enter people's houses and do activities like abusing, beating and even threatening to kill. Due to the influence and fear of the gang, local people were afraid to even complain against them.
Police said that between 2016 and 2026, 11 cases are registered against the gang members in various criminal cases. In view of the continuous criminal activities and creation of an atmosphere of fear in the area, a report was sent for action under the Gangster Act. After getting approval from the competent court, a case was registered in the police station Rishikesh under relevant sections of Gangster and Anti-Social Activities (Prevention) Act.
'King of Uttarakhand' board recovered
During the action, police arrested gang leaders Jagjeet alias Jagga, Pranav alias Raghav Batra and Deepesh Kumar. On the behest of Jagjit, the police also recovered a board written 'King of Uttarakhand' from his house. Police say that the accused used to intimidate people by showing his influence and dominance through this board.
Meanwhile, Ravi Gupta, named in the case, is absconding. Police are continuously raiding possible places to arrest him. According to the police, in-charge inspector Rishikesh Yashpal Singh Bisht, in-charge inspector Doiwala and investigator Rakesh Gusain, senior sub-inspector Naveen Joshi and other officers and employees of the police team were involved in the action.
