Team India batting prodigy Vaibhav Sooryavanshi finally came good with the bat during the first T20I against Zimbabwe on Thursday. The 15-year-old scored 50 runs from 19 balls and hit four crisp boundaries and four blazing sixes in his knock. It was a key knock for the young batter, who played three games in England and was dropped for the final game.
Vaibhav, after reaching his fifty, showed the letter A during the celebrations. Speaking to BCCI after the game, the Rajasthan Royals star said that the first part of the celebration was for his father and the second part was something that he had discussed with Rinku Singh.
He also said that he wanted to dedicate the knock to his entire family and coaches who had worked with him during the course of his career. The fifty also meant that the batter became the youngest batter to achieve the feat in international cricket. The previous record was held by Indian cricket‘s batting great Sachin Tendulkar.
Sooryavanshi managed to score a fifty at the age of 15 and 118 days, while Kushal Malla did so at 15 years and 340 days. Sachin’s record came at the age of 16 years and 213 days,which made him the youngest to reach the landmark for a player from a Test-playing side.
Young sensation doesn’t want to take anything for granted
In his chat with BCCI, the youngster said, “There are some grounds where you like to make runs, and I will not take anything for granted. I will do my best whenever I get a chance, and do my best for the side.” Vaibhav had scored a match-winning 175 in the Under-19 World Cup final against England at the start of the year in Harare.
India will take on Zimbabwe in the second game of the series at the same venue on Saturday. A win will give Shreyas Iyer his first series success as the new T20I captain after the woeful run in Ireland and England. Sooryavanshi, who made his debut in the game at Manchester, scored just 42 runs from three games at an average of 14.
“When you are at the start of your career, a good knock gives you ample confidence for the next few games. I was in the zone and backed my own strengths,” he concluded.
