Varanasi cinema live in IMAX format! Director Rajamouli made a big revelation about the upcoming project
After the global success of ‘Baahubali: The Beginning’, ‘Baahubali 2: The Conclusion’ and ‘RRR’, director S.S. Rajamouli is now gearing up for another grand cinematic experience with his next blockbuster ‘Varanasi’. The film is one of the most talked about and eagerly awaited films of the moment, which has the potential to take Indian cinema to new heights globally.

SS Directed by Rajamouli, the action-adventure film will release next year and stars Mahesh Babu, Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Prithviraj Sukumaran in lead roles. Rajamouli’s unique grand settings, stunning visuals and powerful narrative style will once again be seen in this film.
After introducing the team of ‘Baahubali: The Eternal War’ at the ‘Work-in-Progress’ panel at the Annecy Animation Festival, Rajamouli has opened up about the film ‘Varanasi’. Rajamouli said, “All I can say is that we have completed a lot of the shooting of the film. All the big and important action sequences have also been completed. We are currently shooting for small and interlinked scenes. So we expect the entire shoot to be completed by September or early October.”
Talking about his creative approach while shooting the film in IMAX format, he did not make any changes just for the format. Only the framing would look good in both CinemaScope and IMAX formats, requiring a few minor tweaks at first. Within a few days he told us that he understood the correct method.
While work on ‘Varanasi’ is underway, the ‘Baahubali’ franchise is on its way to further strengthen the Indian animation industry globally with its upcoming animated film ‘The Eternal War’ directed by Ishaan Shukla. Talking about the balance between working on an animated sequel to ‘Baahubali’ and a grand film like ‘Varanasi’, Rajamouli said that the universe of ‘Baahubali’ was already so rich that it was easy to take the story forward.
“We already have the complete universe of *’Baahubali’* ready. So re-entering that universe doesn’t require a lot of fresh thinking. Then when a director like Ishaan Shukla comes in, initially I see how much he understands the characters. Once I’m sure he’s going in the right direction, I stand back and give him complete freedom.”
He said that although the animation industry in India is not yet as developed as live-action films, he is confident that ‘Baahubali’ will be successful in animation as well. Talking about it, Rajamouli said, “We always believed that ‘Baahubali’ would be effective in this medium as well. It was important to get the right team, the right story and the right extension. When Ishaan came up with the idea of taking ‘Baahubali’ to the 14 people of Indian mythology, I thought this is the moment we have been waiting for.”
The global audience has also been kept in mind while making ‘The Eternal War’. According to Rajamouli, the medium of animation expands the scope of expression. Speaking about this, Rajamouli said, “The real hallmark of Indian stories is their colours. I’m not just talking about the visual colours, I’m talking about the characters, the emotions and the style of expressing them. This is what makes India unique. Audiences who like ‘Baahubali’ or ‘RRR’ want to see something more like that. What’s not possible in live-action, is easily achieved in animation. So we’re confident that ‘The Eternal War’ will do just that.”
He also said that due to the flexibility in animation, the story of ‘The Eternal War’ can be presented in a grander format. However, according to him, the foundation of a film is always emotions. Talking about this, Rajamouli said, “For me emotion and grandeur are not two separate things. Emotion is the seed and grandeur is the huge tree that grows out of that seed. So when you choose the seed, that’s what determines the shape of that tree.”
Rajamouli expressed happiness that the IMAX theater will return to Hyderabad in 2027 along with the screening of *’Varanasi’*. Commenting on this, Rajamouli said, “Audiences in Hyderabad and Telugu speaking states are the biggest film lovers in the world. They love not only Telugu films but also Hindi, Tamil, Malayalam and English films equally. So it is only fitting that they get their own IMAX theater.”
He recalled that the Prasad IMAX in Hyderabad once had the world’s best 70mm IMAX projector, Rajamouli said, “After digital IMAX came, there were many changes and IMAX theaters opened in other cities, but we didn’t have that. It was very disappointing for us as film lovers. I am very happy that IMAX is coming back.”
The first look of Mahesh Babu’s roles as Rudra, Prithviraj Sukumaran’s Kumbha and Priyanka Chopra Jonas’ Mandakini in ‘Varanasi’ is already out and has created a buzz on social media. These powerful glimpses have peaked the excitement for the film and now the audience is eagerly waiting for this grand cinematic experience to release on 7th April 2027.
