‘Varanasi’ faces unexpected hurdle during shoot

The scale of big films often comes with big demands, but in Hyderabad, one request has quietly run into a very real problem.

The shoot of Varanasidirected by S. S. Rajamouli, is moving ahead with underwater scenes.

But reports say the team’s request for 150 water tankers has been turned down as the city faces high demand during a harsh summer.

According to the Hindustan Timesproducers from Sri Durga Arts had asked the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply & Sewerage Board for large quantities of purified water to fill a pond set.

They also said they would cover the costs. The answer, though, was no.

HMWSSB Managing Director K Ashok Reddy reportedly confirmed that the water was not supplied.

The refusal, it seems, was shared informally, as officials are dealing with rising demand as the heatwave puts pressure on supply.

Still, filming is not stopping. Sources say the team is now trying to arrange water from elsewhere while continuing shoots through May.

“Varanasi” is Rajamouli’s first project after RRR.

It stars Mahesh Babu as a time-travelling adventurer, with Priyanka Chopra returning to Indian cinema and Prithviraj Sukumaran as the antagonist.

The story moves across continents and even into myth, with scenes set thousands of years in the past.

The magnum opus is set for release in April 2027.
