Venezuela Earthquake: Earthquake wreaks havoc in Venezuela, India starts ‘Operation Amistad’, sends help and hospital

India has extended a helping hand after the devastating earthquake in Venezuela. On the instructions of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India has started ‘Operation Amistad’. Through this mission, efforts are being made to save lives of people by sending medicines, hospitals and rescue teams to the affected areas.

On June 24, 2026, two powerful earthquakes struck northwestern and central Venezuela. Both these earthquakes occurred just 39 seconds apart and their intensity was recorded at 7.2 and 7.5 measurements. Their center was in San Felipe, Yaracuy. These tremors caused massive devastation in cities like Caracas and La Guaira, after which the government there declared a state of emergency.

India sent relief material

India sent a total of 66 tonnes of relief material to Venezuela on June 26 via two C-17 Globemaster aircraft. This includes an Indian Army field hospital, more than 35 tonnes of relief goods, medicines and medical equipment. Along with this, India has also sent two ‘Bhishm Cubes’, which work like mobile hospitals in case of emergency.

ground level rescue operations

India has sent a special rescue team of 41 people. This team also includes nine medical officers from 60 Para Field Hospital along with experienced rescue workers. From June 29, the Indian Army Field Hospital at the International La Rinconada Racetrack in Caracas has become fully operational, where people are being provided free and round-the-clock treatment. 42 out-patients were treated here on the very first day.

Death toll and official visits

Venezuelan Health Minister Carlos Alvarado and other senior officials visited the Indian Field Hospital. According to government figures, 1,719 people have died so far and about 5,000 people are injured. About 12,000 people have been rendered homeless and more than 46,600 people are still reported missing. The Indian Embassy in Caracas said that India is paying full attention to medical assistance and emergency help.
