Digital Desk, Exposed. Miscreants attacked the Magura home of former Bangladesh cricketer and former Awami League MP Shakib Al Hasan on Wednesday night. The incident occurred just hours after Shakib attended a virtual address by former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, sparking political debate about the attack.
According to reports, at around 8:45 p.m., some people targeted Shakib’s home and pelted stones, shattering the windows. The attackers also attempted to set the house on fire. According to local media reports, an attempt was made to use cold drink bottles filled with petrol, but the fire failed to spread.
No one was present in the house at the time of the incident, so no injuries were reported. Shakib is currently in Sri Lanka. Following the incident, security has been tightened by deploying additional police forces in the area. Magura Sadar Police Station Officer Mohammad Abdullah Al Mamun confirmed the attack. Earlier on Wednesday evening, former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina addressed supporters online for about 25 minutes. Shakib Al Hasan, Hasina’s son Sajeeb Wazed Joy, and former Education Minister Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury also joined the event.
Shakib Al Hasan continued playing cricket even after entering politics. However, questions were raised about his role during the anti-reservation student protests in Bangladesh in August 2024. Despite being an Awami League MP, he was criticized for remaining silent on the protests. Later, after the Sheikh Hasina government was ousted from power, properties belonging to Awami League leaders and public representatives were attacked in various parts of the country. Shakib’s home in Magura was also targeted at that time, but he remained safe because he was outside the country.
Following the political developments in August 2024, Shakib left Bangladesh and went abroad. Several criminal cases were registered against him, including a murder case related to the death of a person during the student movement, but he could not be arrested as he was abroad.
