Jamui, Read. In Bihar's Jamui district, police have arrested three people for allegedly assaulting, harassing and indecently treating a minor girl and her male companion by stopping them on the way. After the video of the incident went viral on social media, the police registered an FIR and started investigation. Along with Bihar State Women's Commission, the National Commission for Women (NCW) has also taken cognizance of the matter.
The incident is being reported near Madwa village of Jamui Town police station area at around 7 pm on September 19. According to the police, the victim was identified on the basis of the viral video and her statement was recorded. In the video, some people are seen stopping the boy and girl riding a bike and surrounding them on the way. The scene of alleged indecent behavior of the girl and her male companion being assaulted is also visible in the video.
Six-seven people were seen in the video
Jamui Superintendent of Police Vishwajit Dayal said that the police have received videos related to the incident. About six-seven people are visible in the frame of the video. Some of these have been identified by the police. According to the police, the FIR was registered on the basis of the victim's statement and available evidence. After this three accused have been arrested. The arrested accused are being interrogated. Police are also taking action to identify and arrest other people involved in the incident.
State Women Commission took cognizance
Bihar State Women Commission Chairperson Apsara has also taken cognizance of the matter on the basis of the viral video. He told that he got information about the incident through video. According to him, the incident of alleged molestation of the girl is visible in the video. The Chairperson of the Commission said that she has spoken to the District Magistrate of Jamui. The District Magistrate told them that the incident had taken place on the evening of September 19 near the border of Jamui and Lakhisarai. He has also given information about the identity of the people involved in the incident and the FIR registered. According to the chairperson of the commission, she will send a letter to the Superintendent of Police of Jamui to get information about the further action taken in the case.
NCW asked for report from DGP
The National Commission for Women has also taken suo motu cognizance of the matter. The Commission has sent a letter to the Director General of Police of Bihar asking him to ensure the identification and arrest of all the accused involved in the incident. According to the NCW, media reports and viral videos have revealed the girl and her male companion being stopped, interrogated and allegedly assaulted by a group of people. The matter of alleged indecent behavior with the girl has also come to light.
NCW Chairman Vijaya Rahatkar has directed to provide security, legal aid and counseling to the victims. The Commission has also asked to take necessary legal action to prevent further sharing of the objectionable video circulated on social media.
Action taken report sought within seven days
The National Commission for Women has sought a detailed action taken report (ATR) in the case from Bihar Police within seven days. Police say that investigation is going on based on the viral video, statement of the victim and other available evidence. Along with interrogating the arrested accused, action is also being taken to identify and arrest other people involved in the incident.
