New Delhi. At the Islamic Summit in India, All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) member Maulana Khalilur Rahman Sajjad Nomani said something which has created a new controversy. Nomani claimed to have made an in-depth study of people’s religious identity and beliefs while traveling across India over the past 30 years. In his speech, Maulana Sajjad Nomani argued that the traditional understanding of India’s demographic makeup is fundamentally wrong. According to their analysis, which they claim is based on three decades of ground travel and research across the country, Hindus cannot be considered a majority community if different identity groups are calculated separately.

He particularly emphasized that the Scheduled Castes, Adivasis (tribal communities), Sikhs, Christians, Buddhists, Lingayats and the population of Tamil Nadu have completely distinct identities that separate them from Hinduism. The Maulvi stressed that the tribals are the original and oldest inhabitants of this land and should not be placed under the Hindu umbrella.
