One should not behave with “vindictiveness”: In Vinesh Phogat case, Delhi High Court reprimanded WFI, said – becoming a mother is not a crime

New Delhi. Delhi High Court has taken a big stand on the ongoing controversy regarding Vinesh Phogat’s return to sports. The court slammed the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI), saying a sportsperson cannot be treated in a “vindictive manner” and using motherhood against career is wrong, saying ‘being a mother is not a crime’. The bench of Chief Justice DK Upadhyay and Justice Tejas Karia directed the Central Government to form a committee of experts to assess Vinesh’s fitness. The court also made it clear that Vinesh should get a chance to participate in the upcoming Asian Games selection trials at any cost.

Questions raised on WFI’s decision

Actually, WFI had declared Vinesh Phogat ineligible for domestic competitions till 26 June 2026. The federation said that it is necessary to give anti-doping notice six months in advance to players returning after retirement. But Vinesh, who was preparing to make a comeback after becoming a mother, had reached the National Open Ranking Tournament held in Gonda. During the hearing, the court also expressed displeasure over the show-cause notice in which his disqualification from the 2024 Olympics due to being 100 grams overweight was called a “national shame”. The court said that sport is bigger than any personal fight and this kind of behavior is not right for the future of the players.

Let us tell you that Vinesh Phogat was the main face of the movement by women wrestlers in 2023, in which serious allegations of sexual harassment were made against former Wrestling Federation of India President Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh.
