Imphal : Three years after violence erupted between Maitei and Kuki communities, conflict has now erupted on a new front in Manipur. In 2026, the Kuki and Naga communities have come face to face in districts that were largely untouched during the initial violence. While the situation in the Imphal Valley has remained relatively calm, violence has been concentrated in the hilly districts of Ukhrul, Kamjong, Kangpokpi, None, Tamenglong and Senapati.
The latest round of violence began on February 7, when a group of Kukis attacked a Tangkhul Naga man at Litan Sarekhong in Ukhrul district. Within three days, in Ukhrul district; Riots broke out, nearly 50 houses were burned, a curfew was imposed and internet services were shut down. At least 19 people were killed in violence between the Kuki and Naga communities in September this year.
At least 13 more lost their lives in the first fortnight of October. Of these, 12 were killed in targeted killings and attacks in Kamjong, Kangpokpi and Ukhrul districts in the two days ending October 10.
During the armistice group inquiry round
Naga organizations have accused Kuki-Zo groups, mainly KNF-P and KRA, of being involved in at least five deadly attacks between May and September, which come under a 'suspension of operations' agreement. However, these groups have denied any involvement and no official investigation has yet established their responsibility. Kuki organizations have blamed NSCN-IM and ZUF-K.
own armistice agreement with the central government
The NSCN-IM has its own armistice agreement with the central government. The SOO was signed on 22 August 2008 between the Central Government, the Government of Manipur and two Kuki-Zo groups, the Kuki National Organization and the United People's Front. Its aim was to bring these armed groups to the political negotiating table. The Naga and Maitei groups have demanded the annulment of the SOO agreement. As violence continues in the hilly areas, armed groups are stepping up pressure in the Maitei-dominated Imphal Valley. On October 15, a 12-hour bandh called by the banned Kanglepak Communist Party brought life to a standstill across the state. The group observed October 15 as a black day to commemorate the merger of Manipur with India in 1949.
