Viral Video: A shocking incident has emerged from Madhya Pradesh’s Vidisha district. Schoolchildren from four villages were jumping across narrow sections of a stop dam built on the swollen Betwa River to reach school to avoid their daily commute. When the video of these children, defying death amid the rain, went viral on social media, the Congress Party launched a scathing attack, questioning the BJP’s claims of development.
The Congress Party wrote that schoolchildren in Vidisha, Madhya Pradesh, were seen risking their lives by crossing the swollen river. Students are forced to risk their lives every day to attend school. It said this is the same Vidisha from where former Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan is a Member of Parliament.
The party wrote that the BJP, which makes lofty claims of “development,” has been in power in Madhya Pradesh for nearly 22 years, but the reality is clear to everyone. BJP leaders are only concerned about “development for their own coffers,” and they don’t care whether the rest of the public lives or dies. Shameful!!
This incident occurred in Paloh village, part of the Gram Panchayat of Jiwajipur. Students from here, as well as from Kakraua, Imliya, Bandhera, and Bahlod Chak, attend the Government High School in Paloh. Reaching school by road requires a 10-15 kilometer detour, while crossing the stop dam reduces the distance to just one and a half kilometers. This is why children were choosing this dangerous route daily.

The stop dam had become even more dangerous due to the rising water level of the Betwa River due to rain. In the viral video, students were seen jumping over the narrow gates of the dam amid the strong current. Locals say that if even one child had slipped, a major accident could have occurred.
As soon as the video surfaced, the administration took immediate action and banned public movement around the stop dam. Watchmen have been posted on the spot to prevent anyone from using this route. Villagers say that the real solution will not be found by simply closing the road. They believe that a permanent bridge must be built in this area so that children do not have to risk their lives to go to school in the future.
SDM Kshitij Sharma stated that a proposal to upgrade the Bandhera school to a high school has been sent to the government. Currently, a total of 10 students in grades 9 and 10 are studying there. He explained that students living more than two kilometers away have already been provided with bicycles and can safely reach school by road, but were choosing the dam route to save time. The administration also stated that the Rural Engineering Service (RES) is beginning the process of laying slabs on the stop dam, making it more secure if needed in the future. Currently, the road has been completely closed due to the rainy season.
