Virat Kohli said Test and ODI captain Shubman Gill is evolving as a leader ahead of the three-match series against the West Indies. Kohli lauded Gill’s style of captaincy after the latter replaced Rohit Sharma as ODI and Test captain last year. Under Gill, India haven’t been consistent in the fifty-over format, with many questioning his credentials.
“Shubman Gill is still learning as a captain, as he is still young in the role. He has got the right perspective and the intensity to lead the team. Gill has clear plans in terms of leading the side on the field. With experience and understanding, he will keep improving, which is the same for everyone. The kind of calls you make as a leader are also important,” Virat Kohli said on JioStar.
“He will lead for a long time”: Virat Kohli on Shubman Gill
Virat Kohli backed Shubman Gill as a long-term captain of India, hailing his planning against rival batters. Gill has been brilliant as skipper of the Gujarat Titans (GT) in the Indian Premier League 2026.
“He has the desire to lead the Indian team in the right manner, which is an important factor. I see him leading for a long time, and he will be fine. He thinks of ways to get better, which is a sign of a good captain. He finds ways to get the batters out, which shows his habit of staying one step ahead. He is not shy about coming up with different field placements under pressure and believes in communicating the same to the bowlers,” he added.
Gill will look to bounce back after a poor start to his ODI captaincy career, with the Men in Blue losing three of the four series under him. India will host the West Indies in three matches starting September 27.
