Visitors left hanging mid-air for 30 minutes at China resort receive cup of bubble tea in compensation

The incident occurred on Nov. 1 at Guose Tianxiang resort in Wenjiang District, Chengdu, according to Chinese news site Swamp.

A mechanical failure brought the flying-chair ride to a complete stop, leaving multiple visitors dangling above the ground, Theirs reported.

Video recorded by one of the riders showed the chairs hanging motionless in mid-air while passengers waited to be rescued.

One visitor said the group remained suspended for about 30 minutes before being safely brought down.

The visitors said the resort did not refund their admission tickets. Instead, each person received one cup of bubble tea as compensation.

A resort staff member told the media on Nov. 2 that strong wind gusts had triggered the ride’s safety mechanism, automatically shutting down its operating system, China news site 163 reported.

The resort said it had carried out a comprehensive inspection of the equipment and reopened the ride to the public on Nov. 2.

Guose Tianxiang, on the outskirts of Chengdu, is an amusement and tourism complex featuring a Ferris wheel and various thrill rides.

The incident comes amid several amusement ride malfunctions reported at tourist attractions across China this year, some of which have resulted in serious injuries or fatalities.

On May 1, a ride at a tourist site in Sichuan Province suddenly stopped while operating, leaving several visitors suspended upside down.

No one was injured because the ride was at a low altitude.

Two days later, a 16-year-old girl died while riding a waterfall swing at the Maliuyan tourist site, also in Sichuan.
