A Danish Community Study of 4,092 people revealed that those with vitamin K deficiency in their blood had more symptoms of respiratory problems. The study states that vitamin K deficiency increases the risk of diseases like asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Vitamin K deficiency also weakens lung function. This study has been published in the ERJ Open Research Journal. In an Indian Express report, pulmonologist Dr. Sandeep Salvi explains that this is the first study in which functional levels of vitamin K in the blood have been considered responsible for poor lung health. This study will lead to new approaches in the treatment of respiratory diseases.

How Vitamin K Affects the Lungs:
Biochemist Henrik Dam discovered vitamin K in 1943, earning him the Nobel Prize in Medicine. It’s named after its role as a coagulation vitamin. Coagulation means it instantly stops bleeding. This means that whenever blood is released from a cut, vitamin K coagulates the blood, stopping the bleeding. Additionally, vitamin K binds calcium to bones and muscles. It’s worth noting that blood clots are formed by platelets in the blood. Approximately half of platelets are formed in the lungs. A special feature of the lungs is that they synthesize platelets. A new study has revealed that a vitamin K deficiency can lead to platelet dysfunction, increasing the risk of respiratory diseases.
