A major update has emerged from Indian cricket. According to a report published by Dainik Jagran, former India batter VVS Laxman is being considered as a possible replacement for Ajit Agarkar as the chairman of the BCCI selection committee.
At the moment, however, the matter is only at the discussion stage. No final decision has been taken, and the report suggests the issue is likely to be discussed during the BCCI’s meeting in September 2026, where the board is expected to review the future of the current selection panel.
Earlier, Agarkar’s tenure was expected to continue until the 2026 T20 World Cup. However, after India’s title-winning campaign, the BCCI extended his term until the 2027 ODI World Cup. At the same time, the board indicated that the rest of the selection committee would also continue alongside him.
Despite that extension, fresh reports suggest the BCCI is unhappy with the number of confidential team matters that have reached the media over the last few months.

Why Is the BCCI Reviewing the Selection Committee?
One of the biggest talking points has been the reports surrounding Rohit Sharma’s future. News about his possible retirement and his final ODI reportedly surfaced well before any official announcement.
Before that, reports claiming Suryakumar Yadav would lose the T20 captaincy had also appeared days in advance and were eventually proven correct.
Similarly, discussions around changes to Rohit Sharma’s leadership after the Champions Trophy had made headlines before any official confirmation.
According to the report, these repeated information leaks have not gone down well with senior BCCI officials. As a result, the board is expected to review the functioning of the current selection committee when it meets later this year.
If any change is made, the report claims VVS Laxman is among the strongest contenders to take over as India’s next chief selector.
Will the BCCI Really Replace Ajit Agarkar?
While the report has certainly grabbed attention, making such a move may not be as straightforward as it appears.
Historically, the BCCI has avoided making sudden changes during an official’s tenure. Since Agarkar’s term has reportedly been extended until the 2027 ODI World Cup, removing him midway would send a wrong message and could create unnecessary uncertainty ahead of one of India’s biggest assignments.
The board has generally preferred stability, even when questions have been raised over key appointments. Similar criticism has been directed at head coach Gautam Gambhir at different stages, yet the BCCI has largely backed its appointments instead of making abrupt changes.
Apart from the Greg Chappell era, there have been very few instances where the board has ended a major appointment before the completion of its tenure.
