Hasan Mahmud produced one of the finest spells by a Bangladesh fast bowler as Australia were bundled out for just 198 on the opening day of the first Test in Darwin.
The 26-year-old pacer finished with outstanding figures of 6/55 from 17 overs, including three maidens. It was his career-best performance in Test cricket and also the best bowling figures by a Bangladesh bowler against Australia in Tests.
Australia had won the toss and elected to bat first, but Hasan and the rest of the Bangladesh pace attack made sure the hosts could never take control of the innings.
Hasan Mahmud’s 6 Wickets Against Australia Changed the Innings
Australia started reasonably well through Jake Weatherald and Travis Head. The opening pair took the score to 45 before Hasan gave Bangladesh their first breakthrough.
He dismissed Weatherald for 23 to open the gate for Bangladesh. Soon after, Hasan struck again, removing the dangerous Travis Head for 22 as Australia slipped to 52/2.
From there, Bangladesh’s three pacers kept putting pressure on the Australian batting line-up.
Ebadot Hossain dismissed Marnus Labuschagne for just one, while Taskin Ahmed removed Cameron Green for 13. Australia went to lunch at 74/4.
Steve Smith was the only Australian batter who showed enough resistance. The experienced batter scored 71 off 109 deliveries and tried to rebuild the innings, but wickets continued to fall at the other end.
Hasan Mahmud Rips Through Australia’s Lower Order
Hasan returned to attack Australia’s lower order, and this time there was no stopping him.
After taking the wickets of Weatherald and Head early in the innings, he dismissed captain Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc before getting the biggest wicket of the innings — Steve Smith.
Smith’s dismissal for 71 ended Australia’s main resistance.
Hasan then removed Nathan Lyon to complete a memorable six-wicket haul as Australia were bowled out for 198 in 53 overs.
His six victims were Jake Weatherald, Travis Head, Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Steve Smith and Nathan Lyon.
Taskin Ahmed and Ebadot Hossain also played important roles, picking up two wickets each. Remarkably, all 10 Australian wickets were taken by Bangladesh’s fast bowlers.
Hasan Mahmud Creates History in Australia
Hasan Mahmud’s 6/55 created several records.
He became the first Bangladesh bowler to take a five-wicket haul against Australia in Test cricket. Before this match, Mustafizur Rahman’s 4/84 in Chattogram in 2017 was Bangladesh’s best Test bowling performance against Australia.
Hasan is also the first Bangladesh fast bowler to claim a Test five-for on Australian soil.
Bangladesh had previously played two Tests in Australia, both in 2003. In the previous Darwin Test, Mashrafe Mortaza’s 3/74 was Bangladesh’s best bowling performance.
Twenty-three years later, Hasan has taken that record to another level.
His 6/55 is also the third-best innings bowling performance by a Bangladesh pacer in Test history, behind Shahadat Hossain’s 6/27 and Ebadot Hossain’s 6/46.
Third Test Five-Wicket Haul for Hasan Mahmud
This was Hasan Mahmud’s third five-wicket haul in Test cricket.
He had earlier registered 5/43 against Pakistan in Rawalpindi in 2024 before taking 6/157 against Sri Lanka. His six wickets for 55 runs against Australia have now become the best bowling figures of his Test career.
What made the spell even more impressive was the quality of the opposition and the conditions.
A Bangladesh fast bowler producing a six-wicket haul against Australia on Australian soil is something very few would have predicted before the start of the Test.
Hasan kept things simple, bowled in the right areas and made the Australian batters play. Once he got the early breakthrough, he continued to attack and eventually came back to clean up the lower order.

His 6/55 against Australia may not be the best bowling figures by a Bangladesh bowler in overall Test history, but it is now the country’s best Test bowling performance against Australia and the finest by a Bangladesh pacer on Australian soil.
