“We have evidence, India should also show it…” Nepal’s PM is in dire straits after messing with India! Now suddenly the tone changed

Chitwan/Kathmandu: Nepal’s Prime Minister Balendra Shah’s tone seems to have suddenly changed regarding the ongoing border dispute with India. After being surrounded from all sides over a controversial statement given by him last month, PM Balendra Shah has presented his clarification on this entire matter on Sunday. He has clearly clarified that his government had not at all demanded any kind of mediation from Britain to resolve the border dispute with India.

Let us tell you that a huge controversy had arisen between India and Nepal regarding one of his statements in the Parliament of Nepal last month. Now to calm the same controversy, the Nepali PM himself had to come forward and give clarification.

‘We talked about evidence, not mediation’- Nepali PM said in Chitwan

Prime Minister Balendra Shah responded to his critics while addressing the first general meeting of the ruling Rashtriya Swatantra Party (RSP) in Chitwan district. He said, “Our statement has been misrepresented. We had only said that if historical evidence or documents from the period of British rule in India were required, we would present them on the negotiating table. We had never demanded Britain to be an arbitrator in this matter.”

Prime Minister Shah further said, “We have strong and concrete evidence that the area of Kalapani and Lipulekh is a part of Nepal’s map and territory. If India also has any evidence related to this, then they can also show them.” Taking aim at his political opponents, he said, “We will sit and talk with our neighbor India and resolve this issue very peacefully. There is no need for anyone to worry too much about it.”

After all, what was that statement on which there was a huge uproar?

While assuring the general public, the Nepali Prime Minister also said that people should not doubt his commitment and patriotism towards the nation’s nationality. In fact, during the Parliament proceedings last month, Balendra Shah had claimed that Nepal has occupied Indian territories at different places and he has also involved China and Britain to resolve this serious issue once and for all. After this statement, there was a stir in the diplomatic circles of both the countries.

The Government of India had taken a strict stand on this entire matter and made it clear that the role of any third party will not be tolerated in resolving the bilateral issues of both the countries. Seeing the growing controversy, Nepal’s Foreign Ministry also had to intervene later. The Ministry of External Affairs had clarified that the Prime Minister’s comment was actually related to ‘no-man’s land’ and cross-border occupation between the two countries, it should not be taken in the wrong context.

What is the whole controversy regarding Lipulekh and Kalapani?

There is a very old border dispute going on between Nepal and India regarding the rights of Lipulekh, Limpiyadhura and Kalapani. Both the countries have been staking their sovereign claims on these strategically important hilly areas. While on one hand Nepal claims it to be a part of its country, on the other hand India has always had a clear and strong stand that all these areas are historically an integral part of the Indian state of Uttarakhand. Now it remains to be seen how much ice melts in the relations between the two countries after this U-turn of PM Balendra Shah.
