West Bengal: CM’s name may be announced today, BJP Legislature Party meeting to be held today

Shubhendu Adhikari’s name at the forefront in CM race

Kolkata. After the victory in the West Bengal Assembly elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party Legislative Party meeting will be held in Kolkata in the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah. The leader of the legislature party will be formally elected in this meeting. BJP leader Subhendu Adhikari is considered to be the frontrunner to become the party’s first Chief Minister in West Bengal.

BJP has registered a historic victory in the recently concluded assembly elections. It ended the 15-year rule of the Trinamool Congress, giving a major blow to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s political career.

Although the BJP has not officially announced its choice for the post of Chief Minister, Shubhendu Adhikari is considered to be the frontrunner after securing two politically important victories. Adhikari retained the Nandigram seat, where he had defeated Banerjee in 2021, and has now wrested the Bhawanipur seat, which was long considered his stronghold, from the Trinamool supremo.

The swearing-in ceremony of the first BJP government of the state will be held on May 9 at the Brigade Parade Ground. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Shah, BJP President Nitin Naveen and Chief Ministers of all the states ruled by the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) are likely to attend it. Other names being discussed in BJP circles include party state unit president Samik Bhattacharya and former Rajya Sabha member Swapan Dasgupta, who won from Rash Behari seat.

Some party leaders believe that Dasgupta is an intellectual face who can strike a balance between governance and political message. At the same time, Bhattacharya is being given credit for leading the organization during the important election period. However, senior BJP leaders said that the final decision will be taken by the party’s central leadership.
