West Indies cricket has suffered another setback. They have lost the chance to directly qualify for the 2027 ODI World Cup. Afghanistan’s victory against Ireland on Friday (August 7) has eliminated them from the race for direct qualification. In the rain-affected match, the Afghan team won by 92 runs and qualified for the upcoming ODI World Cup.
West Indies miss out for the third time in a row
The Caribbean team has missed direct qualification for the third consecutive ODI World Cup. They qualified for the 2019 World Cup by playing in the qualifiers. They subsequently failed to qualify for the next ODI World Cup, hosted by India.
The West Indies were eliminated from the World Cup after losing to Scotland in the Super Six stage of the qualifiers in Zimbabwe. This marked the first time in their history that they failed to qualify for the ODI World Cup. Now, it remains to be seen whether they can perform well and advance to the 2027 World Cup qualifiers.
What is the 2027 World Cup qualification process?
The top eight “Full Member” teams (excluding the hosts) in the One Day International rankings will directly qualify for the 2027 World Cup. Currently, South Africa, one of the three hosts, is in the top eight. South Africa’s place in the top eight will also secure a World Cup berth for Bangladesh, ranked ninth. The West Indies, ranked tenth, needed to reach ninth to qualify directly, but Ireland’s defeat has eliminated them.
How did West Indies miss the opportunity?
The West Indies’ hopes for direct qualification rested on Ireland. Had Ireland defeated Afghanistan 5-0 or 4-1 in the five-match ODI series, the West Indies would have secured a World Cup berth by defeating India 2-0. However, the first match of the Ireland-Afghanistan series was washed out due to rain and the Afghan team’s victory in the second ODI eliminated them from the race for direct qualification.
Now, Ireland can only win the series 3-1 by winning the remaining three matches, which will not be enough to advance the West Indies. West Indies have a three-match ODI series against India, but only two of those matches will be useful for them. This is because the cut-off date for direct qualification is September 30th, while the final match of the India-West Indies series will be on October 3rd.
What next for West Indies?
The Caribbean team will now have to play in the qualifiers to qualify for the World Cup. The World Cup qualifiers will be held from February 22nd to March 23rd next year, in which 10 teams will participate. If the West Indies team wins the qualifiers, it will get direct entry into the World Cup. However, if it finishes second, third, or fourth, it will have to play in the Super Series. This Super Series is part of the World Cup. The Super Series will be played between three teams, the winner of which will be a part of the main World Cup tournament.
