What ‘General Hospital’ cast has to say about John Oliver’s cameo

It seems like British and American comedian John Oliver left a lasting impression during his debut on General Hospital.

The July 2 episode of the ABC daytime soap featured a surprise arrival, as the 49-year-old Last Week Tonight host made a grand entrance into the fictional town of Port Charles.

The late-night host’s mystery character arrived in style, stepping out from a helicopter sporting black hair, a sharp navy suit, and a security detail of armed guards.

As he approached the injured Josslyn Jacks, portrayed by Eden McCoy, Oliver’s character drew his gun and fatally shot an already injured gunman.

“Everything’s gonna be OK,” he remarked to Josslyn.

“I’m here to help,” the Community alum reassured Josslyn.

In chat with VarietyLaura Wright, who took on the role of Carly Spencer in the long running series, reflected on sharing the screen with Oliver, praising his performance.

“We had no idea what to expect,” she admitted. “A lot of times, people like to come on and make fun of what we do, and I’m not a big fan of that. Our job is as important as anyone else’s, and we don’t consider it a different type of acting or anything like that. So, I was so impressed with the writing that honoured what he does well while also staying true to what we do, and how he showed up and delivered. It was incredible.”

“If he was nervous, you couldn’t tell,” the 55-year-old actress noted.

Continuing, “He was perfect with his lines. We were in the middle of a very intense storyline that has been building for months, so it’s really funny that he stepped right in and didn’t miss a beat. You would think he’s been on the show!”

Oliver’s guest appearance on General Hospital started with Thursday’s episode and will continue in installments airing Friday, July 3, and Monday, July 6.
