What is Akash missile?
Akash Missile System is an air combat missile developed by DRDO. It has been designed to protect sensitive targets from aerial threats. It is capable of fighting in the air with fighter jets and cruise missiles etc. It has been manufactured by Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL). Akash is India’s indigenously developed short-range Surface-to-Air Missile System. Many components including radar, command system and launcher work together behind this. It also has capabilities like Electronic Counter-Counter Measures (ECCM).

Features of Akash Missile System
Akash missile is equipped with many powerful and latest features. This missile has been given such features which increase its power even more. This missile has 60 kg of high-explosive and pre-fragmented. The missile also has command guidance along with digital autopilot. The efficiency of this missile to kill the enemy is 88% with a single missile, whereas with a simultaneous attack (salvo) of two missiles it is 99%. This missile has the mobility to work on both tracked and wheeled platforms.
What is the range and features?
If we talk about the range of Akash, its operational range is 4.5 km to 25 km. In some variants its range even goes up to 30 kilometers. At the same time, the speed of this missile is Mach 2.5 to Mach 3.5 (up to 4,200 km/h). Its length is 5.8 meters and diameter is 350 mm. Whereas, if we talk about its weight, it comes with a weight between 710 to 720 kg. It has the capability to cover altitude of 18 to 20 kilometers.
