What is blood sugar?

Blood sugar i.e. glucose present in the blood is the main source of energy for the body. When its levels become too high or too low, health problems can arise.

Normal range of fasting blood sugar

Normal person: 70 to 99 mg/dL

Pre-diabetic condition: 100 to 125 mg/dL

Probability of diabetes: 126 mg/dL or more

Postprandial sugar range

Normal status: less than 140 mg/dL (after 2 hours)

Pre-diabetic: 140 to 199 mg/dL

Diabetes: 200 mg/dL or more

Blood sugar range according to age

1. Children

Normal blood sugar in children is considered to be around 70 to 100 mg/dL (fasting). A sudden fall or rise in sugar in children can be dangerous, so a balanced diet is important.

2. Youth (18-40 years)

Fasting sugar in youth should normally be between 70 to 99 mg/dL. At this age, the risk of diabetes may increase due to poor lifestyle.

3. Middle aged group (40-60 years)

At this age the sugar level becomes a little sensitive. The normal range can be considered to be 80 to 110 mg/dL. Regular checkups are necessary.

4. Elderly (above 60 years)

Sugar may also be slightly high in the elderly due to reduced body efficiency. The normal range is considered acceptable to be around 90 to 130 mg/dL, although this depends on the doctor’s advice.
