Chat with AI is now in Incognito mode, WhatsApp brings new privacy feature

WhatsApp has announced a new privacy-focused feature called Incognito Chat with Meta AI, which gives users a way to interact with AI assistants in temporary and private sessions. This feature is designed for conversations on sensitive topics like personal issues, finance, health or work-related questions.
According to Meta, these chats are not stored after the session ends and will start rolling out on WhatsApp and Meta AI apps in the coming months. The company says this feature is powered by its new private processing system, which aims to keep AI interactions secure and also inaccessible to meta.
How does Incognito Chat work on WhatsApp?
Incognito Chat opens a separate AI session inside WhatsApp that only the user can access. Messages automatically disappear after a conversation ends, and the chat does not retain context for future interactions. Unlike standard AI chat, which can save history to optimize responses, every Incognito Chat session starts fresh.
Meta says this feature uses a protected processing environment separate from its servers. This means the company claims it cannot read user prompts or AI-generated replies during interactions. Chats also remain encrypted throughout processing, adding another layer of privacy for users.
Meta’s private processing technology explained
According to Meta, the incognito chat feature is built on its private processing infrastructure, which is designed to handle cloud-based AI requests without exposing personal data. According to the report, this system hides identifying information like IP address and avoids storing chat records after the session is closed.
The company says this approach extends its privacy-first philosophy of end-to-end encryption to AI-powered tools that typically require cloud computing. By preventing long-term storage and limiting access to conversations, Meta aims to make AI interactions safer for users discussing sensitive topics.
Side chat with Meta AI also in development
Meta has also confirmed that it is working on another feature called Side Chat with Meta AI. This upcoming tool is expected to provide private AI assistance in existing conversations without revealing the content of those chats. Although the company hasn’t shared a release timeline yet, it seems like Side Chat is part of Meta’s larger effort to make the AI features on its platform more privacy-focused.
