When is Janmashtami?
According to the Hindu calendar, the Janmashtami festival is starting at 12.25 am on September 4, which will continue till 12.13 am on September 5. For this reason, the festival of Janmashtami will be celebrated on 4th September. People should keep fast on 4th September only. Also, bhajan-kirtan and mantra chanting should be done in the temple and home.
According to religious belief, Lord Krishna was born on Ashtami Tithi in Rohini Nakshatra. If seen accordingly, this year Ashtami Tithi will start from 12:29 am on 4th September. For this reason, the festival of Janmashtami should be celebrated on 4th September.

What is the method of fasting and worship?
On the day of Janmashtami, devotees should wake up early in the morning and take bath. After that wear clean clothes and go to the temple or the worship place of your home. Where you take a resolution to fast and then observe the fast throughout the day. According to religious belief, Nirjala fast on the festival of Janmashtami is considered most auspicious. However, those who cannot keep Nirjala fast, they can keep fruit fast.
People should avoid sleeping on the day of Janmashtami. Instead, one should read religious texts and chant mantras. As soon as night falls, all the devotees should anoint Lord Krishna with Panchamrit and dress him in new clothes. Also, place Lord Krishna on the cradle. After this the devotees should do bhajan-kirtan and perform aarti.

right time to break fast
Two different traditions are seen regarding the breaking of Janmashtami fast. On one hand, many people believe that a person should perform Parana on the next day of Janmashtami. On the other hand, many people break their fast right after the birth anniversary.
