New Delhi. Ups and downs have always been seen in the cricket story of Suryakumar Yadav, but one of his recent revelations is surprising to the fans. Suryakumar Yadav, who won the 2026 T20 World Cup for India, had once started thinking about retiring from cricket. After being out of the team and losing the captaincy, he was so disappointed that he could not see the future path of his cricket career. However, during this difficult period, his wife Devisha Shetty supported him and inspired him to return to the field by reminding him of his old passion.
In an interview given to Aakash Chopra, Suryakumar Yadav told that after being out of the team, he remained sitting completely idle at home for about 40 to 50 days. During this time, the question was constantly running in his mind as to what to do next and whether he should continue playing cricket. According to him, the picture regarding the future had become completely blurry. This period was very difficult for a player who had made his mark in Indian cricket in the last few years.
The situation became more difficult for Suryakumar when he was removed from the captaincy and also dropped from the T20 team. The selectors replaced him with Shreyas Iyer as the captain of the T20 team. It was a big shock for Surya to be suddenly out of the team after continuously achieving big achievements. During this time the thought of retirement came to his mind.
But during this difficult time, his wife Devisha became his biggest strength. Devisha asked him to look back and remember the time when he started playing cricket at the age of 13 to 15. He questioned Surya as to why he had picked up the bat then. Devisha reminded him of his passion for cricket and his madness for the game.
He also reminded Suryakumar of his achievements in the last five years. Playing five World Cups, winning the ICC T20 Player of the Year award twice, achieving the world number one T20 ranking, taking spectacular catches in the 2024 T20 World Cup final and lifting the World Cup trophy as captain in 2026 were among his major achievements. Devisha explained to him that Surya has achieved the position which takes many players 20 to 25 years to reach in just five years.
His wife's words had a deep impact on Suryakumar and he slowly started preparing to return to cricket. He started going to the gym again, spent time with friends and rekindled his old passions by playing tennis and rubber ball cricket. According to Surya, in the last two-three weeks, that old enthusiasm has returned in him.
Now for Suryakumar, cricket has become not only his career but also an inspiration for his daughter. He says that when he looks at his daughter, he feels that now he has to play for her. 35-year-old Suryakumar believes that his love, focus and discipline for cricket has returned. He wants to play cricket with the same passion and madness for his remaining three to four years i.e. around 38 to 39 years of age.
