She defeated Canada’s Heidi Quach 2-1 in the women’s 48kg final in Glasgow to become the first Indian to win a judo gold medal at the Commonwealth Games. Who is Asmita Dey?
Born on March 22, 2003, in Belonia, Tripura, Asmita Dey’s journey is nothing short of inspiring. The daughter of a bicycle repair shop owner, Asmita never gave up on her dreams despite limited resources. Initially, she competed in the 800-meter race, but on the advice of a coach, she pursued judo as her career.
In 2015, she enrolled at the Tripura Sports School, where she learned the nuances of judo under the tutelage of Bina Debnath and later Manik Lal Deb. Following consistent performances in school games and Khelo India competitions, she earned the opportunity to train at the Sports Authority of India (SAI) Bhopal Regional Center.

This is how international career shines
Asmita made her international debut by winning a bronze medal at the Asian Cadet and Junior Judo Championships held in Bangkok in July 2022. She defeated players from China, Japan, South Korea, and Malaysia, becoming the first judoka from Tripura to win an international medal.
