Senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader George Kurien resigned from the Union Council of Ministers on Tuesday. After the end of his six-year tenure as a Rajya Sabha member, he resigned from the post of Minister of State (MoS) in the Ministry of Minority Affairs and Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying.
In a statement issued by Rashtrapati Bhavan, it was said that on the advice of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the President has accepted the resignation of George Kurien with immediate effect under clause (2) of Article 75 of the Constitution. Kurien was holding the responsibility as Union Minister of State in the third term of the Modi government from August 2024.

Rashtrapati Bhavan issued an official statement regarding the resignation of George Kurian. “The President of India, on the advice of the Prime Minister, has accepted the resignation of Shri George Kurien from the Union Council of Ministers under clause (2) of Article 75 of the Constitution with immediate effect,” the statement said.
65-year-old George Kurien’s Rajya Sabha tenure had ended, after which he had to leave the post of Union Minister. According to sources, considering the performance of BJP in the Kerala Assembly elections, he was not nominated to Rajya Sabha again.
Who is George Kurien?
Kurien has been among the old and experienced leaders of BJP. He has been associated with the party since its inception in 1980 and has been holding various responsibilities in the organization for a long time. George Kurian also worked in the field of law before joining politics. He has served as an advocate in the Supreme Court. George Kurien was born on 20 September 1960 in Nambiyakulam, Ettumanoor municipal area of Kottayam district, Kerala.
He completed his primary education in his home region and then obtained bachelor’s and master’s degrees in law. George Kurien was sworn in as Union Minister of State on 9 June 2024. After this, on June 11, 2024, he took charge of the Ministry of Minority Affairs and Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairy. In the third term of the Modi government, he was entrusted with important responsibilities related to these ministries.

George Kurian has held many important positions before. He had worked as the Vice Chairman of the National Minorities Commission. Apart from this, former Union Minister of State for Railways O. Rajagopal has also been Officer on Special Duty (OSD). Due to his long experience in the BJP organization, he is counted among the senior leaders of the party.
George Kurien, who came from Kerala, played an active role in BJP from the very beginning. Since the formation of the party, he has been involved in organizational activities and discharged various responsibilities. Although his tenure as Union Minister was limited, his contribution to BJP spanned several decades.
