Who Is Eloy Room? 37-Year-Old Goalkeeper Makes 15 Saves to Earn Historic Point For Curacao At FIFA World Cup 2026 Against Ecuador

Eloy Room: Few gave tournament debutants Curaçao much of a chance against South American powerhouses Ecuador before kickoff at the Kansas City Stadium on June 20. But the expanded 48-team tournament had its ultimate fairytale narrative as the Caribbean nation earned its first ever point at a FIFA World Cup through a breathless, hotly contested 0-0 draw. Their experienced 37-year-old custodian Eloy Room was also the architect of this historic milestone, delivering a legendary, career-defining masterclass with a staggering 15 saves.
The Man Who Defied Ecuador
For 90 minutes Ecuador laid siege to the offence, never letting up and dominating possession and creating dangerous chances in the box. But time and time again Room was an utterly immovable wall. He set the tone in the first three minutes with an incredible point-blank reflex save to deny Ecuador’s clinical captain Enner Valencia.

Room kept warning of the danger, with the creative backbone of Ecuador anchored by Chelsea’s Moisés Caicedo and systematically slicing Curaçao’s defensive block. He made six key saves in the first half alone and capped it with stunning acrobatics to push a late, thundering long-range strike over the bar. Room’s 15 saves were one shy of the all-time tournament record of 16 saves held by legendary USA custodian Tim Howard against Belgium in 2014.
Who is Eloy Room?
Room, a native of Nijmegen, Netherlands, is the very soul of Curaçao’s long football evolution. A former Netherlands youth international, crucial career choice came in 2015 when he was approached by Dutch legend Patrick Kluivert to declare his international allegiance to his father’s homeland. Room, who is also a former team-mate of Curacao captain Leandro Bacuna at FC Groningen, is one of the most-capped players in the country’s history alongside his skipper.
YOU DID IT, ELOY ROOM! 🥹🇨🇼
When the final whistle blew, Eloy Room collapsed to the grass. He couldn’t hold back his tears. As he cried uncontrollably, his companions ran to hug him. They knew they had just made history.

The veteran custodian established himself with Vitesse in the Eredivisie before winning an MLS Cup in the United States with Columbus Crew in 2020. Now with his USL Championship (second division) stint with Miami FC, Room has spent a decade grinding through regional Caribbean qualifiers and Gold Cups just to taste the global stage.
A Folklore Hero For Curacao
With veteran manager Dick Advocaat at the helm, Curaçao bounced back from a bruising 7-1 opening defeat against Germany to fully restore their defensive honour. Angelo Preciado and Jordy Caicedo struck the woodwork late on but the footballing gods were smiling on the veteran keeper. Eloy Room has written his name into World Cup folklore, just like Cape Verde’s Vozinha did with Spain.
