Who is Raghava Lawrence, likely to contest for Vijay’s Trichy East seat?
Actor-filmmaker Raghava Lawrence has addressed rumours of his political entry in a long video to fans, amid speculation that he could contest the upcoming Trichy East by-election on a Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam ticket — a seat vacated after Vijay resigned. In the video, Lawrence traced his relationship with politics, sought his fans’ opinions, and expressed keen interest in joining TVK.
The announcement, if it materialises, would mark the latest chapter in a career that has moved steadily from background dancer to choreographer, director, actor and philanthropist — and one in which politics has long been a stated aspiration.
From background dancer to director
Lawrence began his career as a background dancer, and has danced in films dating back to the 90s like Rajinkanth’s Uzhaipaali. He is known to be a close associate of Prabhudheva, whose style has a visible influence on Lawrence. His first popular stint turned out to be the song Wisdom is wisdom from Ajith’s Amarkalam (1999). Meanwhile, he also emerged as an able actor with his negative role in Prashanth’s Parthale Rasithen (2001) and K Balachandar’s Parthale Paravasam (2002).
An early on-screen appearance in Thamthakkafrom the Vijay-starrer Thirumalairemains a recognisable moment from that period. He worked with most of the major stars across these industries over a sustained period, building both a professional network and a public profile before moving into direction.

The next watershed moment of his career is his debut directorial venture Mass (2004), a Telugu film starring Nagarujuna in the lead role. The film became the highest-grossing in the Telugu star’s career. Lawrence went on to direct Style, but his Tamil debut directorial venture, Muni (2007), made him a successful director in Tamil as well. A horror-comedy made on a modest budget, it became a significant commercial success and established him as a filmmaker with an understanding of mass audience tastes.
His fourth film, Kanchana (2011), became the biggest and quickly became a successful franchise with two more sequels: Kanchana 2 (2015) and Kanchana 3 (2019). Lawrence is currently in production on Kanchana 4.
In 2020, he directed Laxmiia Bollywood remake of Kanchana starring Akshay Kumar, which released directly on a streaming platform during the pandemic.
As an actor outside his own productions, Lawrence has appeared in Chandramukhi 2, Jigarthanda Double X and Irumbukkottai Murattu Singam.
Rajinikanth: an acknowledged influence
Lawrence has spoken publicly about his regard for Rajinikanth, citing him as a significant influence — not only as a cinematic figure but as a model of public conduct. When Rajinikanth announced plans for a political party, Lawrence said he was keen to join, but was dissuaded by his mother. Rajinikanth subsequently stepped back from electoral politics, citing health reasons.

Lawrence has shared several pictures and videos with Rajinikanth on his Instagram page and refers to him as his ‘guru’. Notably, Lawrence is the second person to acknowledge Rajinikanth as a part of their political journey. Earlier, politician K Annamalai, who resigned from the BJP, had referred to his association with Rajinikanth, while announcing his new political outfit.
Philanthropy and disability welfare
Lawrence has operated the Raghava Lawrence Charitable Trust for several years, with a focus on welfare support for people with physical disabilities. Activities associated with the trust have included distributing wheelchairs, prosthetic limbs and assistive devices, as well as fundraising events in which Lawrence has participated directly.
He has spoken about this work in interviews over the years, framing it as rooted in his own background and his views on the dignity owed to people living with physical challenges.
He also has claimed to be funding 60 children for the past 22 years, and in the video, he introduced four of such children adopted back in the 2000s, who are now youngsters. Lawrence has claimed that his interest in politics is to support more such children.
The Seeman dispute
Lawrence’s journey has not been without friction. He was involved in a visible public dispute with Seeman, leader of Naam Tamilar Katchi, that played out largely on social media. The nature of the disagreement touched on matters of identity and the role of film personalities in public discourse.

Lawrence has described the dispute as eventually resolved when director Karthik Subbaraj unintentionally made both talk over the phone. He referenced the episode in his recent video as part of his broader account of engaging with Tamil political life over the years.
The current moment
Lawrence has said in his video that his mother — previously opposed to his entry into politics — changed her position following TVK’s electoral performance. He is now asking fans whether they believe he should contest, and the response in the comments has been largely supportive.
It remains unclear whether he will contest from Trichy East specifically. While his video suggests an inclination toward TVK, there are separate, unconfirmed reports that he has been in contact with Annamalai’s We The Leaders outfit. No formal announcement has been made by any party.
