Veteran playback singer of Indian cinema and famous as ‘Nightingale of South India’ S. Janaki died in Mysore at the age of 88. There is a wave of mourning in the Indian music world due to his demise. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay and many veteran actors of the film industry have paid emotional tribute to him.
Expressing condolences on social media, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that S. Janaki Amma’s demise is an irreparable loss to the world of music and culture. He wrote that S. Janaki’s songs were sung in many languages and her voice reached the hearts of people of many generations.
PC Modi further wrote – “She expressed every emotion through her singing with great beauty and versatility. PM Modi said that her melodious voice will continue to mesmerize the listeners for years to come.”

S. Janaki’s full name was Sistla Sreeramamurthy Janaki. He was born on 23 April 1938 in Guntur (now Andhra Pradesh) in the then Madras Presidency. His father Sistala Sriramamurthy was an Ayurvedic doctor and teacher.

S. Janaki married V. Ramprasad in the year 1959. Her husband always supported her in her music career and accompanied her during most of the recordings. He died due to heart failure in the year 1997. On the advice of his uncle S. Janaki came to Chennai at an early age, where she studied under musician R. at AVM Studio. Started working as a singer with Sudarshanam. From here her film journey started and later she became one of the most popular and respected playback singers of Indian music.
