Health Desk. A common problem is sudden strain or cramps in the leg muscles while sleeping at night. Sometimes there is such severe pain in the shin or toes that one wakes up. In common parlance it is called neuralgia, whereas in most cases it is a muscle spasm. Lack of water, excess pressure on muscles and some health problems may be responsible for this.
5 major reasons for varicose veins
1. Lack of water in the body: Lack of fluids in the body can occur due to not drinking enough water, excessive sweating or heat. This may increase the risk of muscle cramps.
2. Excessive pressure on muscles: Walking a lot throughout the day, standing for a long time or doing heavy exercise puts pressure on the muscles of the legs. Its effect may be visible in the form of cramps at night.
3. Imbalance of Minerals: An imbalance of minerals like potassium, magnesium or calcium in the body can affect the functioning of muscles. However, their deficiency is not always the cause of varicose veins.
4. Sleeping Position: Keeping the toes bent downwards for a long time while sleeping can keep the calf muscles in a shortened position. This may increase the risk of cramps during the night in some people.
5. Age and some health problems: With increasing age, the problem of leg cramps at night can be seen more. Some medicines, nerve problems related to diabetes and kidney related diseases can also cause this.
What to do when a vein pops up?
In case of cramp, slowly straighten the leg and pull the toe towards you. Light massage of the calf muscles or warm compress can also provide relief. Drinking enough water throughout the day, doing regular light stretching, and eating a balanced diet can help.
If the vein flares up repeatedly at night, the pain is severe or it is accompanied by swelling, redness, weakness or numbness in the leg, consult a doctor.
