Why does America want to capture Kharg Island? Iran’s strict warning on Trump’s threat

New Delhi: The increasing tension between America and Iran has now reached a new and very sensitive point. Tehran has also given a sharp reaction after US President Donald Trump gave strict signals regarding Iran’s strategically important Kharg Island. Iran has clearly said that if America tries any kind of military action or ground infiltration in its territory, it will have to face serious consequences.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Ismail Bagai gave a clear message to America while talking to the media. He said that if the US Army tries to conduct any kind of ground operation, it will face tough resistance. Bagai said that there are people in Iran who are ready to respond to any foreign military intervention. He said that if America moves forward, it will also have to suffer its consequences.

Why is Kharg Island so important?

Kharg Island is considered the most important center of Iran’s oil industry. It is located about 55 kilometers off the coast of Bushehr province and is the country’s largest oil export base. It is said that about 90 percent of Iran’s total oil exports reach different countries of the world through this island. Due to the facility of deep sea water here, big oil tankers can load easily. This is the reason why Kharg Island is considered the backbone of Iran’s economy.

Iran’s stand reiterated on interim agreement

The Foreign Ministry spokesperson also mentioned the interim agreement signed with America. He said that there is no ambiguity of any kind in this agreement and its entire structure has been clearly decided. According to Bagai, the agreement document is short and consists of a total of 14 clauses. He said that America has no good reason to withdraw from this agreement or break it.

Also presented its stand on the Strait of Hormuz

Iran once again reiterated its old stance regarding the Strait of Hormuz. Bagai said that Iran will play a major role in decisions related to the future of this important sea route. He told that further strategy will be decided on this subject through talks with Oman and other countries of the region. Iran says that resolution of regional issues is possible only through regional cooperation.

Tension increased due to Trump’s statements

In recent times, US President Donald Trump has repeatedly talked about taking strict action against Iran. According to reports, the US administration is considering several options to increase military pressure on Iran. These options include intensifying air strikes, the possibility of establishing control over Kharg Island and targeting important sites related to Iran’s nuclear program. However, no official decision has come yet on these schemes.

Experts gave different opinions

Experts believe that if America succeeds in establishing control over Kharg Island, it could have a major impact on Iran’s oil exports. This is likely to increase pressure on Tehran’s economy. However, along with this, the US Army may also have to face Iran’s missile and drone capabilities. Therefore, any such action is being considered extremely risky.

Andreas Krieg, a security expert at King’s College London, says that on the basis of military capability, America has the ability to temporarily occupy a small Iranian island. But he also made it clear that capturing an area and maintaining control over it for a long time are two completely different challenges. According to him, maintaining the security, supply system and strategic advantage of an island can prove to be extremely difficult and costly.
