New Delhi. With increasing age many types of changes are seen in the body. In such a situation, muscle weakness is one of the most common problems. With age, even simple tasks like walking, climbing stairs or getting up from a chair become difficult. This condition is called Sarcopenia. But now scientists have discovered an important biological process behind it, which can show a new path for its treatment in future.

In this new research, scientists have focused on the mitochondria present inside the muscle cells. Mitochondria are the 'powerhouse' of cells, as they produce energy for the body. Its functionality starts getting affected with increasing age.
According to the information received, this research has revealed the role of a special fat molecule named Cardiolipin. It helps in stabilizing the inner membrane of mitochondria and helps in energy production. Scientists believe that cardiolipin levels in muscles may decrease with aging, which increases stress in the mitochondria.
Due to this change, slower but more tolerant slow-twitch fibers can grow in the muscles compared to fast-twitch fibers that provide faster movement and more strength. According to scientists, this may be a kind of protective reaction of the body, due to which cells try to avoid mitochondrial damage.
In tests conducted on laboratory rats, influencing the changes associated with cardiolipin was shown to improve some age-related processes in muscles. However, these results are currently limited to animal studies and further clinical research is necessary to confirm them in humans.
