New Delhi: A report by the American newspaper New York Times was stopped from being published in the country by the Pakistan government controlled by Asim Munir. It is claimed that this news was removed from the Pakistan print edition of NYT, while it was published prominently in America and the rest of the world. After this, a debate has erupted in Pakistan regarding media censorship and religious sensitivity.
Why was the report banned?
According to media reports, NYT’s Pakistan and Afghanistan Bureau Chief Eliane Peltier himself gave this information on the social media platform X. He told that this report, based on the resentment of the Shia community, was published in America and international editions, but was removed from the print edition of Pakistan.
Let us tell you that Alien Peltier wrote that our report was published in America and the rest of the world, but was removed from the print edition of Pakistan. And the reason given for this was that this report is sensitive about the communal tension within Pakistan i.e. the conflict between Shia and Sunni.
What is written in the new NYT report?
NYT had published the report of Pakistani freelance writer Zia Ur Rehman. Its title was ‘Shia Anger in Pakistan’ i.e. anger of Shias in Pakistan. The report claimed that Pakistan Army Chief Asim Munir himself had called a meeting of Shia religious leaders.
The purpose of the meeting was to calm the anger of the Shia community, so that Shia-Sunni conflict does not erupt in the country. Asim Munir spoke to the Shia clerks, explained to them, and said that they should be patient, the situation is under control. Another problem of Pakistan was mentioned in the report. Pakistan is currently the middleman in talks between America and Iran.
Both the countries are sitting and talking in Islamabad. Pakistan is claiming that it is trying for peace. But NYT wrote that the situation inside Pakistan is bad. Shia community is angry. The question raised in the report was that if there is a fire inside the country, then how will Pakistan talk about peace outside?
Pakistan is a country with 35 million Shia Muslims!
It is noteworthy that about 35 million i.e. 3.5 crore Shia Muslims live in Pakistan. Anger has increased in the community for some time. The main reason for this is the incidents that happened in Iran. After the assassination of Iran’s top leadership and religious leaders, anger spread among the Shias of Pakistan. They demonstrated and took to the streets. The Pakistan government fears that if this anger increases, a major conflict may occur.
