Why was there a minute’s silence before Atletico Madrid vs Manchester United in UEFA Champions League?

The second round of the UEFA Champions League 2026-27 saw Atletico Madrid take on Manchester United at the Metropolitano Stadium on Tuesday.

Atletico comes into the match after a 1-2 loss to Liverpool, while United thrashed Sabah FK 4-0 in their Champions League clash last month.

The second round match in the Spanish capital, however, began on a sombre note, leaving fans confused about the reason for silence before kick off.

Why was there a minute’s silence before Atletico Madrid vs Manchester United?

A minute of silence was observed before the Champions League match between Atletico Madrid and Manchester United in memory of two people who passed away recently.

“Tonight, before the match against Manchester United, a minute of silence will be observed in memory of Ana Merodio Borja—mother of our captain, Koke, and of Borja Resurrección, assistant coach of the Juvenil A team—who passed away this morning in Madrid,” Atletico said in a statement.

“We offer our deepest condolences to her family and friends. May she rest in peace.”

United’s previous match in the Champions League had also seen the team maintain a minute’s silence before kick-off in memory of the thousands affected due to the floods in Nepal, Tibet and China.
