Team India Galle Test Preparation: Ahead of the upcoming Test series against Sri Lanka, Team India has stepped up its preparations, keeping in mind the challenge of Galle. According to a TOI report, on Monday, the Indian team participated in a practice session that clearly demonstrated the team management’s desire to prepare by understanding the Sri Lankan conditions in advance. Sarfaraz Khan was the main focus of this training session.
The 28-year-old Sarfaraz, who was called up to the team as a replacement for Sai Sudharshan ‘s injury, looked ecstatic as he stepped off the team bus on Monday. He met members of the support staff and then joined the rest of the team for training.
How was the training session?
- Before training began, the players held a brief huddle and discussed the team’s goals. Following this, the Indian players practiced for over three hours. The highlight of this entire session was that the team attempted to simulate Test match-like conditions in Galle, rather than the usual net practice.
- The center wicket where practice took place had dried out considerably under the hot sun. The pitch was cracked, and the surface was becoming increasingly difficult. The team management deliberately created conditions to give the batsmen a feel similar to the fourth day of a Test match.
- Spin bowling was particularly emphasized in this practice session. Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, Manav Suthar, and Saransh Jain bowled most of the time. As the pitch dried, it became increasingly difficult for the batsmen to play shots. The players were trained to approach the ball with a longer stride, defend, experiment with shots like the sweep and reverse sweep, and wait for bad balls.
- Head coach Gautam Gambhir also closely monitored the practice session. The batsmen were given opportunities according to the expected batting order and their concentration was tested by occasional shuffling of players.
- This session was also crucial for captain Shubman Gill. Among the fast bowlers, only Aaqib Nabi was available for practice, while Mohammed Siraj, Gurnur Brar, and Prasidh Krishna were rested after the warm-up match.
- Gill knew he wouldn’t get enough practice with just one fast bowler, so he trained in the nets with throwdown specialists and batting coach Sitanshu Kotak.
- The bowling plan for Gill was also specific: he was prepared for reverse swing with one new ball and two old balls. Gill appeared in control against most deliveries. There were some that bounced unexpectedly or pitched lower than expected. His good defense and impressive cover drives received constant encouragement from the teammates and support staff.
- After completing his practice in the nets, Gill headed to the center wicket, where he was joined by India’s number-3 batsman, Devdutt Padikkal. Padikkal, who scored an unbeaten 142 in the warm-up match, is currently high on confidence. Therefore, the team management is closely monitoring his batting ahead of the Galle Test.
- For Sarfaraz Khan, this return isn’t just about being included in the team. He now has to prove himself to earn a place in the playing XI. Sai Sudharsan’s injury has certainly opened the door for him, but with Padikkal’s excellent form at number 3 and the existing options in the middle order, the competition won’t be easy. This is why Monday’s practice session was crucial for Sarfaraz as well. He’s getting a chance to showcase his batting skills in Sri Lanka’s spin-friendly conditions.
- The Indian team used old, new, and semi-new balls in this practice session. The aim was to prepare the batsmen for the challenges they would face at different stages. The increasing cracks on the pitch and batting from one end made the practice session even more difficult. This is precisely the situation the batsmen may face as the Test match progresses.
Overall, Team India’s message is clear: be prepared for the Galle Test, whatever the conditions may be. Sarfaraz’s return, Padikkal’s form, Gill’s preparation, and extensive practice against spin were crucial components of this preparation.
