Will India get the hosting rights for Olympics 2026 or not? It will be announced in 2029!
New Delhi. Whether India’s ambition to host the Olympics 2036 is fulfilled will be known in mid-2029 as the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has added a strategic dialogue stage to the host selection process for greater transparency and cost control.
At the 146th session of the IOC in Lausanne, President of the IOC’s future host commission and former President of Croatia, Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic, proposed the inclusion of the new phase, which was passed by vote. Grabar Kitarovic said the potential hosts wanted more clarity.
All stakeholders wanted more transparency. He said interested parties will be selected for strategic dialogue in March 2027. To be eligible for the final evaluation stage, they will have to submit the prospective host questionnaire and necessary financial guarantees.
Contenders will have to meet various criteria including cost control and timely completion of construction work. India is currently in a continuous dialogue process with the IOC. India had submitted its letter of intent to host the 2036 Games in 2024 itself. The targeted dialogue will take place in 2028 after the completion of the strategic dialogue and the host will be announced in mid-2029. India has offered Ahmedabad as the host city.
