Will Rajat Patidar become the captain of Team India? Decision on Surya’s future after IPL!

After the Indian Premier League (IPL), 1 Test and 3 ODI matches will be played between India and Afghanistan. After this, Team India will go on tour to Ireland and England. He has to play 2 T20 matches against Ireland, while he has to play a series of 5 T20 and 3 ODI matches against England. There are demands for changes in the Indian T20 team for the tour of Ireland and England. The discussion about including Vaibhav Suryavanshi, who is making waves in IPL 2026, in the team is the loudest.

15 year old Vaibhav is the highest run scorer in the current IPL season. He has scored 680 runs at a strike rate of 240 plus. Apart from this, there is a strong discussion about selecting Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) captain Rajat Patidar in the team. Patidar is also being advised to hand over the command of the team. Under his captaincy, he has taken RCB closer to the second consecutive IPL title. His performance with the bat has also been amazing. He scored unbeaten 93 runs in just 33 balls against Gujarat Titans in the Qualifier 1 match played in Dharamshala on Tuesday (26 May).

Will Surya be given the captaincy?

Suryakumar Yadav has made India the T20 World Cup champion under his captaincy just a few months ago. However, his form has been bad for a long time, due to which the selectors are considering dropping him from the team. A decision on Surya’s future can be taken after IPL. According to the report of news agency PTI, everything is in the hands of head coach Gautam Gambhir. If Gambhir wants to make a change in leadership, then Patidar can be a great option.

Shreyas Iyer is also in the race to become T20 captain but if RCB becomes champion again, then Patidar can become the first choice. Former cricketer Ambati Rayudu has said on ESPNcricinfo’s show, ‘I would select two-three players and build a team around them and Rajat is one of them.’

Will Dharamshala’s innings change Patidar’s fate?

Two years ago in Dharamshala itself, Rajat Patidar was out of the Indian Test team due to poor form and injury. England’s spinners had dismissed him in three out of six innings in March 2024. After this, Devdutt Padikkal got a chance in place of Patidar in the last test of the series at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamshala. Even though there is talk of a different format now, Patidar’s innings in Dharamshala has brought him closer to returning to the Indian team.
