Was the decision to be taken only after the Champions Trophy?
While discussing on his YouTube channel ‘Aish Ki Baat’, Ashwin said that if the selectors or the team management had already made up their mind not to include these veterans in the 2027 World Cup squad, then this should have been made clear immediately after the Champions Trophy in March 2025. He said that this atmosphere of uncertainty is not at all good for the players. However, Ashwin also admits that talking about dropping a player from the team is a ‘double-edged sword’ because no big player likes to hear that he is no longer needed, but transparency is most important.
Why did the discussion start only 10-12 months ago?
Ashwin’s main question is regarding this delay. He said, “Rohit and Virat have performed brilliantly. Then why did we allow this decision to be delayed till August 2026, when there is only 10-12 months left for the 2027 World Cup?” According to him, such long uncertainty affects the mental state of the players. Ashwin linked it to a house where people don’t want you, hence no player can feel comfortable living there, the effect of which is clearly visible on his game.
Is he needed by South Africa?
Ashwin made it clear that the decision ultimately lies with the selectors, but if ‘cricketing ability’ is the criteria, then they will put the experience of these two legends on top for the World Cup to be held in South Africa. Ashwin asked a direct question to the team management that don’t we need the experience of Virat and Rohit for the upcoming South Africa tour?
