Washington: The US President has made a surprising announcement to end the Iran war. According to reports, Donald Trump claimed that West Asian countries have reached an agreement to end the Iran war. He also stated that the US will not launch any new attacks on Iran.
What did Trump say in his social media post?
US President Donald Trump claimed on social media on Saturday evening that West Asian allies have agreed on the outlines of a deal to end the ongoing war with Iran. He said that given this progress, no new military strikes will be ordered in the five-month-old conflict for the time being. Trump said that the proposed agreement would include the immediate and complete opening of the Strait of Hormuz and the end of Iran’s nuclear threat.
Trump wrote, “In the interest of the world and the existence of a successful and prosperous Iran, I have agreed to cancel the attack for now, provided a deal can be reached soon.” Trump also claimed that Israel has also expressed its commitment to working with the US to complete this deal with Iran, which can end the war.
Earlier on Saturday, Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman spoke with Trump by phone. During the conversation, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman expressed concern about potential US military action against Iran and urged Trump not to escalate the conflict. The conversation came as
Trump directed the military to launch new attacks on Iran.
Why did Saudi Arabia appeal to the US not to attack?
Saudi Arabia feared that if the US launched a large-scale attack on Iran’s energy infrastructure or other key infrastructure, Tehran could retaliate by targeting energy installations in Saudi Arabia and other Gulf countries.
Earlier this week, Saudi Arabia supported the US strikes against several logistics and weapons bases of Iran-backed militias in Iraq. However, Riyadh has consistently insisted on resolving the dispute between the US and Iran through dialogue. In response, Saudi Defense Minister and Crown Prince’s brother, Khalid bin Salman, arrived in Washington on Wednesday. He met separately with Trump and Vice President JD Vance to discuss Iran strategy.
Netanyahu had appealed to Trump to continue the attack.
Trump also met Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House on Tuesday. This was the first face-to-face meeting between the two leaders after the Iran war started in February. Netanyahu had urged Trump to continue the military campaign against Iran. However, now suddenly Trump has surprised everyone again by announcing an agreement to end the Iran war. The Iran war is anyway considered politically important for Trump and his party. This war is unpopular among many American citizens and it has also affected the global economy before the important midterm elections to be held in November.
