‘Women will not forgive’… Smriti Irani’s sharp attack on Congress on Women’s Reservation Bill

Tezzbuzz Desk – The political battle over the Women’s Reservation Bill has intensified. Former Union Minister Smriti Irani on Saturday launched a scathing attack on the Congress, accusing it of “betraying” women. He said that after the defeat of the bill in Parliament, the attitude of some parties has been very disappointing and they are presenting it as their political victory.

This statement came at a time when the Constitutional Amendment Bill related to women’s reservation and delimitation in the Lok Sabha could not get the required two-thirds majority and could not be passed. In the voting, 298 MPs voted in favor of the bill and 230 against it, while 352 votes were needed to pass it.

Smriti Irani alleged that Congress and its allies are celebrating the fact that women did not get the benefit of 33 percent reservation immediately. He said that the women of the country will never forgive those who were clapping and smiling in the House.

He further said that there has been a demand for women’s reservation for decades, but there was continuous delay in implementing it. Smriti Irani raised the question that when there were long opportunities to remain in power, then why concrete steps were not taken on this issue.

She also accused the Congress of trying to take political advantage in the name of women empowerment, while women did not get adequate representation at the grassroots level. He also said that some opposition parties were opposing the bill regarding seats in southern states, while the government had also proposed expansion of seats to increase women representation.

Smriti Irani also said that the Prime Minister tried to give more political stake to women as well as ensure that there is no injustice to any class or men.
