Women's Insecurity: How will development happen without women's security?

How can society develop without women’s safety?

Women’s Insecurity : Daughter’s smile brings happiness in the family and society progresses with the progress of women. But today, from birth till every stage of life, girls and women are facing insecurity. From going to school to living in other cities for job and fulfilling family responsibilities, their safety remains a big question. On one hand there is talk of women empowerment, while on the other hand crimes against women and girls come to the fore. Amidst slogans like Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao, many serious questions are being raised regarding the safety of women. Girls who come to Hyderabad from villages in search of employment often look for jobs by staying in hostels. Taking advantage of their financial constraints, the case of allegedly collecting eggs illegally in the name of paying hostel rent is worrying. The police is investigating this matter related to a women’s hostel in Begumpet area.

It is important to stop misuse of medical technology

Taking advantage of the financial needs and unknown circumstances of young women coming from other states in search of employment and harming their physical health is a matter of serious concern. However, whose role is played in this matter will become clear only after police investigation. Helping childless couples to have children through medical technology is an important achievement of science. But using this technology for illegal business is wrong. Consent of women donating eggs, following health safety and medical rules is mandatory. For this purpose, the Central Government had enacted the Assisted Reproductive Technology Regulation Act in 2021. Despite this, lack of monitoring may encourage illegal activities. Compulsory registration of women hostels in cities, record of operators and surprise inspection is necessary. The government should also make arrangements for safe accommodation and cheap food for the economically weak girls coming in search of jobs.

Safety rules should be strictly followed in schools

A Class 10 student at Raptadu Government School in Anantapur district was allegedly attacked by a man with an electric saw inside the classroom. Another student also got injured while trying to save her. This incident has raised serious questions on the security arrangements of schools. Incidents like stalking, harassing, pressurizing girl students in the name of love and attacking them for rejecting proposals should not be ignored. Every girl has full right to express her choice and reject any proposal. Society should respect his independence and self-respect. There should be security arrangements at the main entrance of schools, record of visitors, maintenance of CCTV cameras and special responsibilities of teachers. Along with providing information about self-defense to the girl students, a complaint system should also be made available where they can express their problems without any fear. It is important to implement the school safety guidelines of the Central Government at the ground level and not just limit them to paper.

Responsibility of government and society for women’s safety (Women’s Insecurity)

The heart-wrenching incident of death of a mother and her two children in Vikarabad district also brings to the fore the need for security in families, mental anguish of women and social support. The circumstances behind this incident should become clear in the police investigation. However, society should seriously consider how financial problems, family disputes, loneliness and mental stress can affect women. According to NCRB data for 2024, 4,41,534 crimes against women were recorded across the country. Telangana recorded 24,495 cases and the crime rate per 1 lakh women stood at 128.6. These figures reflect reported cases. Apart from these, many such incidents can also happen which may not come to light. The government should prepare a special action plan for the safety of women. Women help centers should be strengthened in police stations and immediate action should be taken when complaints are received. Security arrangements in women’s hostels, offices, educational institutions and public transport centers should be continuously monitored. There is a need to run awareness campaigns from villages to cities against child marriage, human trafficking and sexual harassment. Boys should be taught from childhood to respect women, understand their personal freedom and respect their disagreements. Women’s safety is not the sole responsibility of the police. This is the collective responsibility of every family, every citizen and the entire society.
