Women’s T20 World Cup 2026: Stormy innings by Sophia Dunkley and Freya Kemp… England scored 200 runs against Scotland
leeds: In the 16th match of the Women’s T20 World Cup 2026, the England women’s team displayed a brilliant performance and defeated Scotland by 38 runs. Thanks to the excellent half-century of Sophia Dunkley (57 runs) and the all-round performance of Freya Kemp (39 not out and 1 wicket), England had set a huge target of 201 runs for Scotland to win, in response to which the Scottish team could score only 162 runs by losing 7 wickets in the stipulated 20 overs.
England’s historic record, 200 runs on the board
The England team led by Charlotte Dean, who came to bat first after losing the toss, has created history. The England team has become the first team in the world to score 200 or more twice in the same T20 World Cup.
After the wicket of Amy Jones fell on the very first ball of the match, Sophia Dunkley took charge. With the help of luck (taking advantage of Scotland dropping three catches), Dunkley played an aggressive inning of 57 runs in 37 balls and completed his first World Cup half-century. In the middle order, Alice Capsey (40 runs) and captain Heather Knight (25 runs) led the innings.
Freya and Gibson batting brilliantly in the death overs.
The real work of taking England to a huge score was done by the pair of Freya Kemp and Daniel Gibson in the last overs. England scored 59 runs in the last 18 balls:
– Freya Kemp: Scored 39 unbeaten runs in 16 balls with the help of 2 fours and 2 sixes.
– Daniel Gibson: Scored 30 unbeaten runs in 11 balls, which included four boundaries in the last over.
With the help of these innings, England’s score reached exactly 200/5. Kirsty Gordon took 2 wickets for 30 runs for Scotland.
Scotland’s daring chase and Sophie Ecclestone’s milestone
Chasing a mammoth target of 201, Scotland got off to a flying start in the powerplay thanks to Darcy Carter and Katherine Fraser. Scotland had scored one run more than England (52/1) in 6 overs of powerplay.
But as soon as the powerplay ended, England’s star spinner Sophie Ecclestone turned the tide of the match. Ecclestone completed his 150th wicket in T20 international cricket by dismissing Katherine. In the very next over, he also bowled Darcy Carter.
Sarah Bryce tried to fight in the middle order by playing a quick inning of 34 runs, but due to the fall of wickets at regular intervals, the Scotland team came on the back foot. In the end, Kirsty Gordon and Pippa Sproul made an unbeaten partnership of 47 runs in 33 balls to reduce the margin of defeat for the team and took the score to 162/7.
